How relocation astrology works

Relocation astrology through Albert Einstein's chart

Albert Einstein relocated twice in his life. I will use his chart to explain relocation astrology, then cross-check the theory against his life to see whether it works.

The Jupiter astrocartography line

One of the key things you will encounter in relocation astrology is an astrocartography map. On the map calculated from Albert Einstein's details, a pink line crosses the east coast of America and Canada. That line corresponds to Jupiter.

The map's controls show which planet each coloured line represents.

AC as the ascendant

The symbol AC marks the point of ascension. It shows that if Albert Einstein relocated to the eastern coast of the United States, Jupiter would fall in the first house.

In the birth chart based on where he was born in Germany, Jupiter is not in the first house; it falls in the ninth. The astrocartography map shows that it would move to the first house after relocation.

Astrocartography has a learning curve. Its lines, colours and symbols can be overwhelming when you are unfamiliar with them.

Recalculating the destination chart

In practice, I recalculate the chart. If a person was born in Bangalore and wants to relocate to London, for example, I calculate the birth chart again with London as the place instead of Bangalore, without changing the time.

For Albert Einstein, I used 10.37 a.m. GMT and took daylight saving into account based on the historical time zones used in Berlin. I then kept the same time and recalculated his chart for Princeton, New Jersey, where he relocated.

Jupiter shifts to the first house in the Princeton chart. Recalculating the chart therefore shows the same thing that we discovered from the astrocartography map.

The Jupiter–MC midheaven theme

Astrocartography simplifies the analysis. If you are looking for a place that might present excellent learning opportunities, you would probably want Jupiter in either the 9th or the 10th house. You would therefore search for the Jupiter–MC line.

For Albert Einstein, the MC line corresponding to Jupiter crosses the west coast of England and Northern Ireland. MC translates to the Midheaven, or the 10th house in practice. Had he relocated there, Jupiter would most probably have fallen in the 10th house.

Nearby moves and whole-sign patterns

Einstein had relocated earlier, in 1895, when he moved from Germany to Zurich. Given the proximity of the two regions, his chart did not change. Relocation astrology is therefore useful when you are moving far away from where you were born.

The main and relocated charts

How do you use a relocated chart such as Albert Einstein's New Jersey chart? You cannot ignore the main chart, because it will always remain part of your life. The new chart created by relocation, however, can produce better or worse circumstances for you.

Jupiter in Dhanishtha and Moon in Jyeshtha

Jupiter in the 1st house, particularly in Dhanishtha, is in my view a sign of massive fame. Einstein was already quite popular, but he gained even more popularity after moving to the United States.

Moon in Jyeshtha is a sign of leadership, particularly in research. I am not reverse engineering this: the mythology of Jyeshtha and the sign of Scorpio leads me to the same conclusion.

Moon, Saturn–Mercury and Mars themes

There is another combination: the Moon has no planets on either side. That is a sign that an individual can find focus when inspired.

I also find Saturn and Mercury together in his chart, showing that he was a patient problem solver. That fits a saying I found on the internet and attributed to him: “I am not a genius. I am just a patient problem solver.”

The Moon is in Scorpio, a sign ruled by Mars, while Mars is in Uttara Ashadha. This shows a combative individual. Another quote credited to him says that he was a militant pacifist who was willing to fight for peace. These details give us a sense of who he was. The chart also suggests career growth, with Jupiter in the 1st house and the Moon strongly placed in Jyeshtha.

Dashas stay unchanged after relocation

The Dasha never changes, no matter where you move. At the time Einstein moved in 1932, he was going through Mars and Rahu's period. I have previously said that Rahu's period, particularly the Antardasha, can lead to relocation.

In his case, the relocation was born out of fear of the German authorities. Life can be chaotic during Rahu, including a phase of fear, so I can understand why he relocated at that time.

In 1895–96, the Mahadasha changed from Ketu to Venus, and he relocated from Germany to Zurich. If you are going through Rahu or Jupiter's period, there is every chance of you relocating. A change of Mahadasha can also lead to relocation.

Angular houses, ninth and twelfth

Einstein also has combinations suggesting that he would settle in a foreign place. To find these, I look at the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. If those houses have a relationship with the 9th and 12th houses, there is every chance of relocation.

I find this relationship in his main chart. The heavily occupied 10th house helps explain his career orientation. Its ruler, Jupiter, is 12 places away in the 9th house, creating a relationship with both the 9th and the 12th.

This also explains why he might build a huge name for himself in a foreign place. Jupiter in Dhanishtha is a sign of massive fame.

Combining maps, charts, combinations and Dashas

Astrocartography is extremely helpful when you have no fixed plans and do not know where you would like to relocate. If you already know that you may move from Bangalore to either Sydney or London, for example, you can recalculate your chart for each place and compare them. The Dashas can then help you find the best time.

The starting point is to identify combinations in the main chart, Navamsa and Dashamsha that link the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses with the 9th or 12th house. If you have many such combinations, relocation is likely. If the Dasha favours it and the astrocartography map identifies favourable regions, all of this can help with your relocation plans.
